This policy outlines how to maintain that standing at SideBurn. We’re here to support each participant’s efforts to be in good standing and honour the community by giving feedback to camps or participants who may fall out of good standing.
By default, all participants are considered to be in good standing. Because SideBurn is an intimate and community-driven event, art installations, placed theme camps, and individual participants have a significant influence on our shared culture and experience.
Good standing applies to all artists, theme camps, and individual participants.
Benefits of Being in Good Standing
- Eligibility for directed tickets to qualifying participants
- Placement for theme camps and art installations
- Ability to be eligible for grants
- Opportunity to take on lead volunteer roles
- General support from the Flame Ontario Arts Collective organization and SideBurn’s associated departments
Losing Good Standing
Artists, theme camps, and individual participants may lose good standing for any of the following reasons:
- Failing to notify Flame Ontario Arts Collective if an art installation or theme camp needs to cancel its participation in SideBurn.
- Placing an art installation or theme camp outside its designated boundaries and refusing to collaborate with the Placement team to resolve the issue.
- Receiving noise complaints and being unwilling to work with the Sound team to resolve the issue.
- Creating an undue strain on SideBurn’s resources (e.g., over-reliance on volunteer support, failing to bring adequate infrastructure or supplies, requiring excessive mediation or logistical intervention from multiple departments).
- Being unresponsive to reasonable requests from SideBurn volunteers.
- Being flagged by the Leave No Trace (LNT) team for excessive Matter out of Place (MOOP).
- Impersonating a SideBurn volunteer or misrepresenting affiliation with the event’s organizing team.
- Engaging in disruptive behaviour at any time during the event, including early access. Please refer to our Code of Conduct for more details on what constitutes disruptive behaviour.
- Having one or more incident reports filed against them.
Participants Not in Good Standing Are Still Welcome
Artists, theme camps, and individual participants who lose their good standing will automatically be returned to good standing after one year, provided there are no further incidents. In the meantime, they are still welcome to attend SideBurn.
The community values growth, accountability, and second chances, and all participants are encouraged to use the year to address concerns and demonstrate a renewed commitment to SideBurn’s principles. There’s always room to grow, reconnect, and re-engage with the community.
