Newsletter QA Reviewer – French and English (Comms)

SideBurn is a regional Burning Man event held each May long weekend in Stone Mills, Ontario, on the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, Mississaugas, and Huron-Wendat peoples. Rooted in radical inclusion, communal effort, and “leave no trace,” it brings together over 1,000 people to celebrate creativity, collaboration, and community.

Run entirely by volunteers, SideBurn thrives on the DIY spirit and communal effort. From theme camps and interactive art to skill-sharing and collective care, everyone is invited to show up, contribute, and be part of something larger than themselves.

Details

Department: Communications
Reports to: Comms Producer or Co-Producer

The Communications team looks after how Sideburn talks to its participants. Sideburn is a
participant-created arts, culture, and camping event, and our bilingual newsletters help keep
participants informed in both English and French. We publish from about November through
June, roughly monthly.

The Newsletter QA Reviewer reviews both editions before they’re sent, helping ensure they are
complete, consistent, polished, and working as intended. You may also occasionally review
some blog content as well.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review both English and French newsletters before they’re sent out for publishing.
  • Check spelling, grammar, formatting, links, images, and layout.
  • Verify that the French edition matches the English edition in meaning and completeness.
  • Compare the French edition against the English so both say the same thing and read
like they had the same care.
  • Flag and fix errors, inconsistencies, or unclear content.
  • Occasionally review blog posts for similar quality issues.
  • Communicate feedback clearly and promptly.

What to Expect

  • Pre-event: (November to May): about 4 hours a month, mostly flexible and remote,
    timed around each newsletter sent.
  • Event: nothing required on site — but if you’re at Sideburn 2027, we’d love to say hi in
    person.

Who We’re Looking For

  • You pick things up and follow through. If you say you’ll do it, it gets done. This matters
more than anything else on this list.
  • Are comfortable reviewing content in both English and French.
  • You have a strong eye for detail.
  • You can spot inconsistencies in copy, formatting, links, and images.
  • You communicate feedback clearly and respectfully.
  • You can meet agreed-upon deadlines.
  • You’re comfortable working with Mailchimp, or willing to learn.
  • Experience is a bonus, not a requirement.

Why This Role?

  • Your review will be an important final check before our newsletters reach readers.
  • By catching small issues and helping both language editions feel equally polished, you’ll
support clear, accessible communications across the Sideburn community.
  • This is a real window into how communications work at Sideburn and a genuine pathway
into the collective, with real ownership of a whole team’s quality.
