Theme Camps are the heart of SideBurn’s experience. Groups of SideBurners will camp together under the shared theme The Great Rewilding, contributing their unique energy and creativity as a gift to the community.
A gift can take many forms–such as a DJ/dance floor, an art car, workshops, a costume exchange booth, yoga sessions, a cozy lounge, and more. Let your creativity lead the way!
What is a theme camp?
Theme Camps are groups of participants who transform their campsites to reflect their chosen themes, adding creativity and playfulness to the SideBurn experience. From striking and inviting visuals to communal spaces and activities, these camps create immersive offerings that define the spirit of the event.
Your camp’s location will be assigned based on what you’re offering and space requirements. As a Theme Camp, you’ll also be featured on event signage, maps, and in the What, Where, When (WWW) guide.
Key considerations for planning and running your theme camp
- Submit your Application: Submit your theme camp application by February 6th, and include details for any sound systems, fire art, flame effects, and any other details we need to know about your camp.
- Apply for Grants: Take advantage of our Theme Camp Grant to bring your ideas to life.
- Design with Purpose: Create a visually exciting and welcoming design while keeping safety and Matter Out of Place (MOOP) guidelines in mind.
- Engage the Community: Include activities, events or services within your camp available to the entire SideBurn community.
- Foster Good Vibes: Keep sound levels reasonable, vent generator exhaust responsibly, and handle disputes with a positive, neighbourly attitude.
- Maintain Good Standing: All attendees must comply with SideBurn policies to remain in good standing with the community.
Funding to Bring Your Theme Camp to Life
This year, we have a $20,000 budget to support theme camps, with grants of up to $750 available depending on the number of applicants. Please consider your request carefully to help us support as many camps as possible.
Grants may be used for communal and public-facing infrastructure (tents, seating, lighting, decorations, generators), rentals (trucks or equipment for interactive elements), and consumables (food, fuel, non-alcoholic drinks). Grants cannot be used for firewood or intoxicants (e.g., alcohol). Please consider your request carefully to help us support as many camps as possible.
New this year, you can apply for the grant directly within the Theme Camp application form.
