Exciting Updates for SideBurn 2026: New Theme, Effigy & Temple Applications

🔥 Introducing SideBurn’s 2026 Theme: The Great Rewilding

The Great Rewilding calls us back to our roots, to the wild within and around us. A return to instinct, imagination, and play. It’s a celebration of nature’s chaos, human creativity, and our deep connection and respect for the earth that holds us.

Together we become forest spirits, glowing fungi, creatures of light and laughter, co-creating with the land rather than upon it. The Great Rewilding is a living reminder that the wilderness was never lost, only waiting for us to awaken.

    🚨 Drone Notification – Saturday Morning (9AM–10AM)

Heads-up, SideBurn community! This Saturday morning between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM, a drone will be in the air briefly over the event grounds.

    📡 Why the Drone?

The SideBurn Board will be conducting a high-level visual survey of the land to help us evaluate the space for future improvements and better long-term event planning. This is a one-time, non-promotional flight.

    🔒 Your Privacy Matters

We’re committed to respecting the privacy of all attendees. The flight has been scheduled early in the day to minimize any disruption and will be focused solely on land assessment—not on filming people or activities.

🚫 Reminder: No-Drone Policy for Attendees

SideBurn maintains a strict no-drone policy for all participants. This brief exception is being made for planning purposes only, with Board oversight.

If you see the drone Saturday morning, now you know why! Thanks for your understanding and support in helping make SideBurn better every year. ❤️🔥

🧠💖 Support and Resources at SideBurn

SideBurn can be intense—in the best and sometimes most challenging ways. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, need a reset, or just want to scream into the void (literally), here are some ways to take care of yourself and others this year:

🔊 Screaming Club @ Center Camp – Sunday, 2:30 PM

Need to let it all out? Join fellow screamers for a cathartic blast of energy at Center Camp.

“A club where we scream. A short sharp shriek to get out whatever needs getting out. A little waking up the breath and body, 1 minute of screaming, then cool down and get on with your day. Come as you are. Leave lighter.”

    📘 Emotional Survival Guide

The SideBurn Board has put together a helpful guide for navigating the emotional ups and downs of the burn. 👉 Read it here

    💆‍♀️ Self-Care Camps

Explore camps focused on self-care by using the Self-care filter on DUST. Highly recommended: Camp Care

    🕊️ Sanctuary

If you’re in real distress or need a safe, quiet space to recover, Sanctuary is here for you.
Located in a calm, out-of-the-way spot, it offers cots, blankets, pillows, and soft lighting—plus support from trained volunteers. 👉 More info here

Be kind to yourself. Be there for each other. SideBurn isn’t just a party—it’s a community. ❤️‍🔥

New Accessible Seating Areas for Effigy and Temple Burns

This year, we’re making the Effigy and Temple burns even more welcoming with a dedicated accessible seating area along the perimeter. Keep an eye out for the signs to find your spot. Up front, you’ll find a cozy ground-sitting zone. Just behind that, at a safe and comfy distance from the flames, we’ve set up a bring-your-own-chair section. Not sure if you’re far enough back? Just flag down one of our perimeter volunteers, and they’ll help you out.

Help Expand Equity Tickets, Announcing SideBurn 2025’s Temple & Effigy, Introducing CARE, & Call for Volunteers!

❤️ Help Expand Equity Tickets – Pay It Forward!

We want to provide as many low-cost Equity Tickets as possible, but due to overwhelming demand we’re reaching our limit. As a result, the deadline to apply for Equity Tickets has been moved up to April 1. We’ve allocated 10% of tickets in the SideBurn budget for reduced-cost access, but we can only go beyond that with community support.

When purchasing your ticket, you can add a $25 Pay It Forward contribution (or more!) to help fund additional low-cost tickets. Every contribution goes directly toward making SideBurn more accessible for those who need it. We’d love to give an Equity Ticket to everyone who applies, and with your help, we can get closer to that goal.

If you need a low-cost ticket, apply by April 1. The Equity Assist stream will remain open until May 6. With any questions regarding equity or accessibility, please reach out to equity@sideburn.ca.

    🔥 Unveiling SideBurn 2025’s Temple & Effigy!

Sacred Grove: A Temple of Reflection, Renewal, and Connection by Sky Ece Ulusoy

The Sacred Grove is a collection of “trees,” inside of which a temple clearing has been created to host mourning, tribute, and connection. This space draws inspiration from ancient sacred groves, which were once common across cultures as places of healing.

It symbolizes the cyclical nature of life—death, rebirth, and growth. Through natural materials and interactive elements, the temple invites participants to slow down, reflect, and engage in a shared experience of communal reverence. It serves as a metaphor for personal transformation, renewal, and our collective responsibility to protect the Earth.

Big Top: A Towering Effigy of Light, Color, and Celebration by Karl Demel & Rich Martin

Embrace joy and freedom of self-expression through a massive interactive structure. Dare to climb Big Top’s guts and peer above the festival landscape. Wrapped in bans of twisting colour, strings of flags anchoring and bathed big top in shimmering lights. The core is open from the earth to the sky by day, and lit in a rainbow kaleidoscope by night.

The silhouette will be seen from all corners of sideburn and perhaps the whole county when we light it up and burn it down on Saturday night. Big Top may only be in existence for 3 days but he will live on forever in our festival hearts. So, step right up and be amazed.
